Putting the Pieces Back Together Series

The tornado that came to North Dallas in October was devastating to me, my studio, and art. I moved into a new space and brought the damaged paintings with me. I lost 310 pieces. They sat in my studio hallway taking up space and reminding me of what happened. Earlier this year my church asked me to write/create a devotional. Everything else fell into place.

A portion of the proceeds from this series will go directly to the CFT. They created the Dallas Tornado Recovery & Relief Fund. Donations support the immediate needs as well as the continued recovery and rebuilding efforts across North Texas.

1 Kings 19:11-13a

11 Then the Lord said to Elijah, “Go, stand in front of me on the mountain. I, the Lord, will pass by you.” Then a very strong wind blew. The wind caused the mountains to break apart. It broke large rocks in front of the Lord. But that wind was not the Lord. After that wind, there was an earthquake. But that earthquake was not the Lord. 12 After the earthquake, there was a fire. But that fire was not the Lord. After the fire, there was a quiet, gentle voice.

13 When Elijah heard the voice, he used his coat to cover his face and went to the entrance to the cave and stood there.

I’m not always able to communicate my thought with words, so I created a piece of art to help me translate my feelings about this scripture.

This piece was created from paintings of mine that were destroyed in the tornado last year.  Taking small cut strips from different paintings, I wove them together. Leaving small empty spaces between the canvas. The canvas represents the chaos and distraction that happens in our daily lives that keep us from hearing God. The small empty space represents the quiet space where Elijah could hear God’s quiet, gentle voice.  I want the space to be a reminder for us to seek out small quiet areas in our lives to listen for God’s gentle voice.

Prayer

In the midst of our busy and distractive lives, help us to find space to hear your gentle voice.
